Visit your dentist, who will perform a deep cleaning of your teeth and gums. Tartar is removed through scaling and root planing. Scaling removes tartar above and below the gum line by scraping and ultrasonics. Root planing removes bacteria on the tooth root and may be done by laser.
Floss at least once a day. Bacteria loves to hide in between your teeth. If this plaque is not removed, it hardens and forms tartar, which only your dentist can remove. This tartar will lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease.
Brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush 2 or 3 times a day. The electric toothbrush provides a deeper clean due to the spinning head, as well as having the ability to get up under your gums but a manual brush used with small up/down motion will penetrate gaps effectively . Ensure that you use a fluoride containing toothpaste.
